This guide provides instructions for using the Neumi Atom 4K and Neumi Atom 4K Lite media players with MKV files from the Headphone Dust store (including Definitive Digital Editions).

The Neumi Atom series represents one of the most cost-effective ways to enjoy Headphone Dust releases in their full, native resolution, including high-resolution stereo and immersive Dolby Atmos.
The Neumi Atom 4K and 4K Lite are dedicated hardware media players that play files directly from a USB drive or SD card. Unlike many smart TV apps or entry-level players, these devices are capable of "bitstreaming" high-definition audio formats to your AV Receiver.

Setup & Hardware Connection
To achieve full resolution playback, you must connect the device correctly:
-
Connection: Connect the Neumi Atom via HDMI directly into an input on your AV Receiver (AVR) or Soundbar.
Note: Connecting to the TV first and using eARC can sometimes cause sync issues or downsampling; a direct connection to the AVR is recommended.
-
Storage: Load your Headphone Dust MKV files onto a USB flash drive or SD card (formatted as exFAT) and insert it into the Neumi's USB port.
Recommended Settings
To ensure you are hearing the full Dolby Atmos TrueHD stream rather than a downmixed version, configure the following in the Neumi settings menu:
Audio Output: Set this to "HDMI Passthrough" (sometimes labeled as "Raw"). This tells the Neumi to send the untouched audio data to your receiver for decoding.
Video Resolution: Set to "Auto" or the native resolution of your display (up to 4K).
Playback Performance
Dolby Atmos & TrueHD
The Neumi Atom 4K is highly recommended for our MKV releases because it correctly handles Dolby Atmos via the TrueHD lossless codec. When playing a Definitive Digital Edition, your receiver should display "Dolby Atmos" or "TrueHD" on its front panel.
High-Resolution Stereo
High-res stereo tracks included within the MKV files play back perfectly at their native sample rates, providing a high-fidelity listening experience.
The 5.1 Surround FLAC Limitation
While these devices excel at bitstreaming cinema formats (Dolby/DTS), they have a specific technical limitation: they are unable to play back 5.1 Surround FLAC files.
-
If a Headphone Dust release is provided specifically as a 5.1 FLAC file (rather than an MKV with a TrueHD/DTS stream), the Neumi will likely fail to output audio or will only play the front left/right channels.
-
Solution: Always use the MKV version of the album provided in your download for these devices.
Summary
The Neumi Atom 4K and 4K Lite are excellent, budget-friendly choices for Headphone Dust customers. If you primarily want to listen to immersive Dolby Atmos mixes and High-Res Stereo via MKV, these devices perform as well as players many times their price. Just be aware that for standalone 5.1 FLAC files, an alternative playback method will be required. For the best all in one device, we recommend the Nvidia Shield TV Pro. It's more expensive but covers all the bases.
